My kids really like this place and the food always makes them happy.

Very underrated sushi here. This is my go-to sushi in the area. Great quality with creative high quality rolls along with all the classics at a very reasonable price. They have hibachi but I alway walk by and go with the sushi. "See you tomorrow"

I'm not sure what they did... but after several visits, the quality of the food here has gone down hill. The sushi is not as fresh as what one can find at other places. Their all you can eat sushi, in my view has some quirky hitches with it, so make sure you read the fine print for the owners are unforgiving. Also, even when they are not busy, the sushi takes and extremely long time before it comes to the table. Granted, this is somewhat of a given, but here is seems to be "extra" long. You'll not see me checking in here again and I'll be taking my business to Bento Cafe.

I would like to base my review on the sushi portion of the restaurant. The quality of their sushi is fantastic! One of the best sushi places in northern lake county. I have ordered the 911 roll, spicy Tuna rolls, eel, salmon , and all sorts of specialty rolls and of course saki. The staff is amazingly friendly and fun and the owner says "see you tomorrow!" Every time.

I'm from China and always a fan of Asian food, including Japanese food. In my standards Yuri of Japan is a really good place. They have nice staff here and the food portion(teppanyaki style entrees) is HUGE. i am a girl and i was here with five guys. none of us finished our food. The entree comes with soup, salad, a side dish, veggies, one meat, and one ice cream. I was already full before the meat was served. The dressing for the salad is sooooo good that my bf drank all of it...the veggies is fresh and the meat is prepared well. Good place to get together with friends/family. I don't live in Illinois but next time when I visit I will come back here for sure!

Great food. Reasonable prices. Very good service. They could benefit from more atmosphere like private booths with rice paper doors or having the female staff wear kimonos :-). To me these types of places are as much about atmosphere as they are about food. I would say that they have great potential and if good food and friendly service are what you are looking for then Yuri of Japan is a great find. Tony makes the experience great but IMHO the atmosphere needs a little something more.

Food was good. The last time I was there it was my mom's birthday. We did not mention it to anyone but the waitstaff must of over heard us talking. They brought out a small fruit dessert which I thought was really nice...that is until I saw that they put it on the bill! Really? We hadn't even requested it. Well no matter how good the food was we will not be returning.

I'm a bit more used to Tsukasa and the golden sauce is my absolute favorite part of it all and I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the menu at Yuri. Food was very comparable and the fried rice was even better and the menu for main courses was much better

i would give this place 2.5-3 stars. it's really not bad but compared to Tsukasa, i probably will go to Tsukasa. Friendly staff, good environment, and service was prompt. I like how in the beginning they give you a hot towel to clean your hands in. It's a nice, Japanese tradition that many restaurants offer in Asia. I got the Mahi Mahi (hibachi) Entree. It comes with soup and salad. Both tastes very similiar to Tsukasa's. The Mahi Mahi wasnt bad. Fresh enough. It was a little on the heavier side of salt and butter for me. But other than that, not too bad. Side note ( I'm always scared to order fish at restaurants during the week when i know they dont have a lot of customers. Nor do i get anything fried or soak it in sauce when ordering seafood. It ruins the natural sweetness of the seafood itself.) One thing i noticed was the bean sprouts was kinda sour. It seem like he poured a bit too much vinegar in it? It had that strong vinegar taste. But i dont think anyone uses vinegar to cook bean sprouts? You dont get that nice, crisp crunch when biting into it. It obviously has been in the fridge for a few days. I did NOT get sick but my instincts told me to stop eating after the first bite. The fried rice wasnt bad either. But it just lacked a flavor that just made tsukasa's fried rice taste better. The teppanyaki show is just as "entertaining" if you are going there for that. Tsukasa's just have a couple more fancier things. I feel bad for comparing two restaurants but it's kinda hard not to when both serve very similar menu items. Honestly, i will go to Tsukasa if i want Teppanyaki again. I like Tsukasa's upscale environment, huge dining area and the food. As for prices, they are about the same. $$$

I can not speak really for the sushi (outside of a California Roll), as the times we have been here we have always done Hibachi. I usually order the Filet & Golden Shrimp. Every time it is spot on good. This past time, my husband ordered the Ahi Tuna...not that great. Tasted VERY fishy. Most dishes come with Soup, Salad, Rice, Veggies, and Ice Cream. As with all these restaurants...you get the whole dog & pony show with the onion volcano and flipping of kitchen utensils. The service is usually really good. Particularly one younger gentleman - the most attentive server I have ever experienced in a Japanese Steak House.

My husband and son LOVE their sushi (and hibachi) but my daughter and I only eat the hibachi and its fantastic. Their service is spectacular too. Tony is a particular joy to have, very personable and friendly, actually all of their chefs are. We've only had fantstic meals and love that its so close to us!

I love sushi, but if this were my first sushi experience, I would never try it again. The waitstaff is so friendly, however, they seemed to lurk over our table and were a little TOO attentive. The sushi was edible, but poorly executed. They squirt an orange mayo on literally every sushi roll. I wonder if they are trying to hide a poor quality, low grade fish, but I couldn't tell because I couldn't taste the fish. I think they are trying too hard to appeal to the American palate, but their head chef needs to move more towards the traditional Japanese style of sushi. In addition, they served the spicy scallop, cooked and drowning in that mayo. Spicy scallop should be served raw and not with mayo at all. We had a side of the hibachi fried rice and that was delicious. Yuri, please put down the mayo!

Maybe I'm being biased as this is my friend's restaurant, but their sushi is oh soo yum! I haven't really tried anything other than the sushi, but I would definitely come back to try other things on the menu, but it's just so far :/

I went to Yuri with my husband for a quick, close 2 home, bday dinner with out our little sweeties. We usually go to the Japanese steak house in vernon hills, so i was expecting a smaller version of that. I made reservations for 2, but our friends surprised us and the restaurant was very accommodating. They moved us to a different table with smiles. Each of us had hibachi dinners and sushi apps. The sushi was tasty and fresh, but cut uneven. The steaks were cooked perfect and my chicken teriyaki was good. My husband thinks that the portion could be a little larger. Its clean, no frills good food. We plan to go back with the kids since its so casual. Kinda reminds me of Tsukasa before they moved to the new place. Wish they had more than one stall in the ladies room.

I've been there more than 10 times. They always have great food and friendly chefs/wait staff!
(5)Carol L.
I'm very surprised about all the bad reviews. This is my first time here and I'm shock to discover great sushi here. We ordered 911, baby Godzilla, Matt and Andrew and runs roll (forgot the real name off the menu). Sushi came fairly quickly and were very tasty. This is a very nice place and I don't get all the negative reviews. I'd definitely come back again.
(4)Judy M.
No, no, no, no, no. Worst. Sushi. Ever. Went here once while living in the middle of nowhere Illinois. Very nice server. Split a tempura plate, it was good, but fried veggies and shrimp aren't tough to make, hell I've made them at home. Ordered a roll and some nigiri, one of which was unagi. Unagi is my favorite, I love it. I ate it and it was foul, incredibly fishy/spoiled tasting. Not fresh at all. I tried to swallow it down and almost vomited. Unagi should NEVER taste like that. The nice server and good tempura was not enough to combat the taste of the unagi. I should have known better, but I was craving sushi and it was before I discovered Sushi Kushi.

This is our "go to" spot when the mini-me's ask for Japanese and we need something closeby. While the food / service isn't unforgettable, it's decent enough that we keep coming back - read on for details. ATMOSPHERE: Meh... it's dark, with 6 or 7 teppon (cooking) tables. The floors are black(ish) carpet, and the bathroom floor tiles for some reason are always sticky (makes me think someone poured teriyaki on the floor). Outside that very appealing portrait, the decor is what it is - kitzy japanese, they could do a world better to improve it's appeal. Thankfully we don't go for the ambiance. FOOD: Speaking ONLY for the cooking tables (reviews of the sushi, which I don't eat, are scary :), the teppon / hibachi style food has always been more than sufficient for our needs. While I won't say it is mind blowing good, it's always been satisfying, and as good or better than other local suburban options (at a far less cost, especially with the coupons they frequently offer). SERVICE: Generally lacking, as most teppon places are. The hostess, no matter HOW busy they are, will tell you it's only a 5 minute wait to be sat. Sometimes this is right, and most times it's more like 30, but hey, who's counting. The wait staff is adequate, not friendly, and most of the time efficient VALUE: Dismal. There wasn't a thing on the entree menu less than $16.00, and I have no idea who came up with such expensive prices for the food they're serving. If I were the owner, I'd be embarassed to hand out the menus with this obvious price gouging. A dinner for 4, with 2 children (!!) and sodas cost more than $60.00, before tip, which we opted not to leave, other than this review. Unbelievable, really.

It's entertaining service and good food. The prices are what to expect from this style of restaurant. The soups and salads are very good, and the appetizers tasty. The one star reviews crack me up - complaining about knowingly using an expired gift card and being denied? Complaining about appetizers you could make yourself? Neither of these merits a one star review and should not be considered representative of what is truly a good restaurant.
(5)Caroline P.
I'm surprised at the negative reviews! I lived in Grayslake for a year and went to Yuri many times. Always had great service and great sushi. I think it is much better than its stars on yelp reflect.

Good food/service. Would recommend.

I don't want to be mean, but I was not impressed with this place, maybe it's because i had something to compare it to. I wanted to try it out because it's like 5 minutes from my house, and I wanted to see if I can get that type of food without making a trip out of it, apparently I can't. The fish was overcooked, there was no flavor that you want to come back for, and the egg sauce was nothing special. If you want to try out that type of restaurant, where the food is prepared in front of you, I highly recommend Ron of Japan, it's definatelly worth a 30 minute drive.
(2)Jill L.
I refuse to go back. A year or so ago, we got a gift certificate and unfortunately it expired last December on the 15th. We went in after Christmas to see if they would let us use it and they refused. A $100 gift certificate went down the drain. The food is not that good either.
(1)Eric F.
habachi = always pricey, but satisfying sushi = not worth it i'm not sure what it is, but suburban restaurants never have good sushi. if anyone could point me to a good one, i'd be forever in their debt. the only good (and well-priced) sushi i've had is in japan, or at least in the city.
(3)Daisy H.
The quality has declined and serving size has greatly decreased. Would not recommend!
(2)Mike L.
Old guy who owns the place is really nice. Their food is typical hibachi style. Not very small children friendly. Went there with a crabby hungry two year old and instead of seating us they made us wait over 20 minutes. They clearly didn't want the business so we left. I'd go back if I have a coupon otherwise pass and go elsewhere. Steak is tasty and usually cooked properly though.

My wife and I really like Yuri. It is close by, the food is food and it offers a fun evening out. The owners name is Tony (not sure last name) and he works hard to make sure people are having a good time. We sometimes bring our daughter (who is 3) and she enjoys it. If you have starving kids or need a place to get in and out in 30mins this isn't your place. But if you have 60-90 mins and want a nice meal with personal service, support this local/non-chain restaurant.
(5)Julie L.
I enjoy Yuri of Japan. It's nice to have this option in the far north burbs. I've eaten here three times in the past 2 years and each time I've had a great experience. The food is always good. The fillet is mouth watering!! They offer a pretty wide variety of drinks as well. Gotta try the sake :) I also enjoyed their sushi (California Roll) and Edamame.
(4)Greg G.
Purchased takeout here. Wife said the sushi was suprisingly good, personally I can't stand the stuff, so I'll take her word for it. Had the hibachi chicken and shrimp, was ok. Although, I'm sure it lost a bit on the drive home. If you don't mind driving an extra 20 mins, just go to Tsukasa in Vernon Hills.
(2)Michelle F.
The food is pretty good but not any different from the other local places like it, but you can always get a seat immediately and the service is always very good. Its a smaller place so a bit cozier also. Sushi is also decent and they have some interesting rolls also.
(3)Jen R.
We've been going there since it opened. It is alway consistently good. The people are friendly and often recognize us when we go. The sushi is good and they have the BEST Teriyaki sauce around. As far as being kid friendly, they are a hibachi place, and the open flame might scare small children, but it's a blast for those who like the excitement of watching the chefs do tricks. They are always entertaining. One of our favorite places to eat! We bring out of state friends there and they love it too! We will be back Tomorrow!!:)
(5)Sara P.
I love the staff at Yuri of Japan, Tony is phenomenal and worth the wait if they are busy (and they usually are Friday and Saturday evenings). I'm a sushi gal, so I haven't personally tried the hibachi, but my friends can't seem to get enough of it. The portions are large and they are very flexible about what you order, and Tony (and some of the other chefs) put on a fantastic show. The sushi is alright, not the best I've had but certainly above average. I particularly enjoy the Red Dragon roll, and if you're a fan of cooked maki, my boyfriend can't get enough of their Dynamite Roll. While Yuri's may not been in the same league as Tsukasa or Sushi Kushi, its far superior to several of the other surrounding sushi establishments like I Love Sushi, Hayashi and Ichibans.

Great restaurant and great service. The proprietor Toni has been perparing Habachi food for over 2o years and is an expert chef and entertainer. I know of no better Japanese restaurant.
